Laser Therapy for Your Pet’s Arthritis and Other Treatments

Even here in Florida, we experience seasonal weather changes that can affect our pets. Studies show that 65% of dogs between the ages of 7 and 11, and 61% of cats over the age of 6 have some degree of arthritis. For many pets the pain caused by this condition is year round, but some are particularly affected with cooler weather and precipitation changes. (Just like us humans!)

What are your options? After years of practice, I have multiple options that I recommend for my patients. Our goal together is to help your pet reach a pain free zone with as little intervention and side effects as possible. Many times, I will recommend glucosamine supplements; and in some cases pain medication is warranted. One of the treatments I have seen the most success with is laser therapy.

Laser therapy is versatile in that it can treat pain and inflammation just about anywhere in the body. The miracle is that there are NO side effects. Treatments are generally tapered, starting off at twice a day for a few days, then once a day and then down to as little as once a week or as needed. Our equipment here at St. Francis is a low level laser that means your pet (and our technicians) do not have to worry about wearing protective eyewear while the treatment is being performed, and each treatment takes under 10 minutes.

I can share many success stories from here at our hospital. From surgeries that have shorter and less severe recovery periods, to fractured bones that have healed faster than I have ever witnessed. I would like to share with you this video showing Max the Cat’s amazing recovery from a congenital defect. If you have any questions about whether laser therapy is right for your pet’s condition, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
